Composer, music producer, thinker and songwriter
I compose and produce score music for films in various genres and styles both within the modern film music canon of strings and piano and well beyond it. As a former historian of ideas, adventures into the under-used areas of early modern and medieval music inspire me tremendously. I am always interested in new challenges and in finding new forms of expression.
Teaching and Research Projects
I coordinate The Public Information Cultural Factory (or Tiuku, more on www.tiuku.org) and run several of Tiuku’s projects, many of which combine scholarly work, art and civic action in new ways. SONGLAB is a new project that provides songwriting workshops for young people from various backgrounds. The project also allows scholars in youth research, studies on multiculturalism, music pedagogy and language learning to hear young people in a non-formal environment where they are actively reflecting on experiences and looking to articulate and express their points of view. Further SONGLAB workshops are being planned in cooperation with the Univeristy of Arts and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Publishing their own songs and short interviews is a key element in the SONGLAB learning process. Below, you’ll find some examples from an earlier instantiation of the project, RIMLAB.
Music for plays
I’ve composed, recorded and produced music for plays and puppetry plays. In 2010, I wrote the songs and produced the music for Dick Idman’s adaptation of Uspenskij’s Uncle Fedya, his Dog, and his Cat (Viirus teatern, Helsinki). In 2016, puppetry play Reetu & Lola with my music received it’s grand opening on the Nicken stage of Helsinki’s Svenska Teatern. In 2017 and 2018, I have composed and produced the music for Saunatontun lahja and Tuuliin tähystäjä, two puppetry plays by Anne Lihavainen’s Puppetry Theatre Ofelia.
MY SONGS ON CD & ONLINE
Over the last ten years, I’ve written lyrics, composed, produced and recorded songs both in my home studio and elsewhere. In 2010, I was one of the producers of and singers on Toisenlainen Toivo – Kärki på annat vis (Warner Music, 2009). In 2015, I released the CD Tigerbrand – Ferlinvisor från Finland with 14 songs set to texts by the Swedish poet Nils Ferlin.I’ve also published songs for children on the bilingual record Reetu & Lola (some examples in the playlists below), and a number of my other songs have been recorded by other people, such as ”Då vi ses igen” and ”Kvar i mig”, which were released on the CD Kvar i mig 2017 by my wonderful sister Julia Korkman and pianist Claes Anderson. A more solid set of examples will be available here shortly!
Film and editing
Artists and scholars alike should today learn to document their own work. For me, that has meant filming workshops, interviews and studio work to produce short documentaries, music videos, trailers and the like. I’ve produced and in several cases also filmed and edited some 50 short documentaries, interviews and music videos for Yle Areena, including the puppetry trailers and the films linked above under ”Teaching and Research.” My other films include documentary film ”Mun Elämä” that I filmed and edited for Finnish Academy research project TRUST. I’ve also put together music videos of my own music (see under ”My Songs”) as well as for other artists.
